Well, what do I write about here? My favorite band? My own influences? What got me into this deal in the first place? While I was an aerospace undergrad at IIT Bombay, I used to write articles for magazines like JAM and review bands for our campous magazine InsIghT and various forums, but I've quite given up now. I also contributed frequently to the music forum iitb.music on Varta.
As for my taste in original music, this cartoon below best sums it up!
I still remember way back in time more than 10 years ago in March 1997 when my next-door neighbor in H9 gave me an audiotape of A Real Dead One (1993). That was when I heard The Trooper for the very first time. I was enraptured from that moment. And thus marked the end of an era and the start of an unforgettable journey... Watch Bruce Dickinson introduce Iron Maiden to the crowds in Dubai at the Desert Rock Festival held on on 9 March 2007. Watch Iron Maiden perform their magnum Opus Fear of the Dark live at Dubai Desert Rock Festival . The concert attracted more than 20,000 fans from over 40 different nationalities. Read concert reviews here. And here.
1997 was the beginning. A decade later, I love experimenting with different styles of music and lately, however, I find that I've mellowed quite a bit and developed a taste for classical and neo-classical music, and especially Woodstock-era improvised jazz-fusion and bluesy/folksy inspired rock music. But I'm a metal fan first and foremost. There are just too many genres and sub-genres in metal. I don't really care about the genre, or the lyrics or the artwork as long as the music sounds good to me. Of course good lyrics and packaging are always a bonus! All said and done, music forms a very personal and important part of my life that opens the door to my darkest innards. As of today, where hardcore/pure metal is concerned, my favorite bands have always remained true to their roots all along the decades of decadence. will always be Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, HammerFall, Judas Priest, Scorpions, Dio, Bruce Dickinson, King Diamond & Mercyful Fate.
This section is basically what's been spinning in CD changer over the past few weeks. I spend a lot of time wandering from place to place, kind of like a nomad. Once a month there's this long drive to Muscat too! I'll try to describe what this is like... stretches of open boundless desert flanked by distant mountains, wild Arabian Oryx herds grazing in the distance, the endless dunes punctuated by a faraway camel caravan in the distance, you squint and look upwards to see a lone kite hovering in the cloudless sky. I can't even begin to describe what the desert night is like. Nowadays, more often than not, I find myself taking the trips because it gives me time to listen and relive old carefree memories when I was a wildchild...
I love writing and I love music. It follows that I love writing about music. Here are a few raves and rants that I've written as random thoughts strike my mind.
